The nipple features a valve that allows air to escape when the baby latches onto the pacifier. This ventilation system pushes air out from inside the nipple through the valve, thus flattening the nipple to naturally conform to the baby's oral cavity.
The valve is also the reason why water may be present inside the nipple after cleaning and sterilization. If this happens, simply squeeze the nipple flat to expel any excess water.
